Wigan took a 21st-minute lead through midfielder Charles N’Zogbia after he picked up James McCarthy’s chipped pass before curling into the goal with a left-foot shot.

France international N’Zogbia gave away a penalty in the 36th by fouling Leon Osman in the penalty area but Mikel Arteta’s shot was easily saved by Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.

Leighton Baines equalized for Everton with a powerful 78th-minute penalty after Hugo Rodallega’s handball.
