Dubai to AIFF’s rescue

DUBAI — There is no better place than Dubai to have the team’s build-up for a big tournament, according to India football coach Savio Medeira. “Everyone knows that the best sporting facilities in the world are made available in Dubai. The infrastructure is outstanding and so is the organisation over here,” said Medeira.

This is the sixth time that an Indian team has opted for Dubai as a camp venue, though it were forced to opt for Dubai at the last moment this time. It may be recalled that Indian-owned English Premier League club Blackburn FC had cancelled a visit of Medeira-coached football team over fresh fears about the future of club coach Steve Kean.

The Rovers had invited India to their training complex to use club facilities and also to mingle with Kean’s squad. To make matter worse, the team’s tour to Dubai had run into an unexpected last-minute hurdle after AIFF had been left stunned by Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) last-minute refusal to bear Rs 4 million (Dh298092) expenditure for the Dubai tour.

However, the problem has been sorted out once AIFF gave the go-ahead. Even though it was a last-minute arrangement, Medeira is happy with the preparatory camp organisation, which is handled by Dubai-based Gulf International Promotions (GIP). “There is nothing to complain about. We always got the best from Dubai with GIP around. The previous trips have helped a lot. During this training we’ll be playing against Oman and Azerbaijan and an Iranian team, and I’m sure it will be a good exercise,” said the Indian coach.

GIP director, Raul Fernandes said that it gives him added pleasure to help the Indian team. “This trip was arranged on a short notice and we are grateful to the UAE Football Association (UAE FA) for helping us in making the necessary arrangements,” he pointed out.

For Raul, Dubai is like a second home for India. “The last time India played at Al Nasr stadium, there were around 6000 fans rooting for their country. The fans want to see the Indian team in Dubai more frequently,”’ he added.
