Al Wahda held defending champions Al Ain to a 1-1 draw in the fifth round of the Arabian Gulf League at the Al Nahyan Stadium, late on Friday night.

Michel Bastos had given Al Ain the lead on 47 minutes before Al Wahda equalised through Marco Estrada on 67 minutes.

Al Wahda have eight points from five games, while Al Ain have seven from five games.

Elsewhere in Al Dhafrah, 10-man Al Dhafrah held Al Jazira to a 1-1 draw at the Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan Stadium. The draw spelt Luis Milla’s end as Al Jazira coach.

Nelson Valdez gave Al Jazira the lead on 37 minutes but Al Dhafrah equalised through Kamel Chafni on 45 minutes. Al Dhafrah were down to 10 men after Hassan Zahran was sent off on 62 minutes.

Al Wahda came looking in the sixth minute of the game through Damian Diaz. But his attempt was tipped over the cross bar by goalkeeper Dawoud Sulaiman.

Al Wahda should have taken the lead on 12 minutes but captain Ismail Matar botched it up by firing it straight to Sulaiman after he had had a clear sight of goal.

Al Ain’s best opportunity came on 26 minutes when Bastos sprinted down the left flank and sent in a low cross. But Asamoah Gyan failed to make contact from close range.

Al Ain came close again on 36 minutes but midfielder Matei Mirel Radoi shot it straight to the goalkeeper Adel Al Hosani.

Al Ain pressed hard and took the lead two minutes after the break. Mohammed Al Shehhi deflected Bastos’ pile driver with a header. But Bastos pounced on the rebound and volleyed it past Adel Al Hosani.

But Al Wahda found the equaliser from a set piece after substitute Salem Saleh had won a freekick. Estrada’s curling freekick too a deflection off Omar Abdulrahman and Mohanad Salem before rolling into the goal, on 67 minutes.

Al Ain could have taken the lead three minutes later but Gyan’s dipping header into the pitch, bounced over the cross bar.
