Mark Webber topped the first practice session at the European Grand Prix for dominant Formula One team Red Bull on Friday.

Webber’s lap time of 1 minute, 40.403 seconds around Valencia’s street circuit was more than eight-tenths quicker than Vitaly Petrov’s with Renault.

Fernando Alonso of Ferrari was the only other driver to get within one second of the Australian. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton was 1.107 seconds behind, and Nick Heidfeld of Renault rounded out the top five.

F1 leader Sebastian Vettel was 16th in the 90-minute session with a lap of 1:42.941 in his Red Bull, while second-placed Jenson Button of McLaren was seventh quickest.

The session ended under yellow flags after Timo Glock stalled his Virgin car after a spin out in the fourth turn. Force India finished with just one car after Niko Hulkenberg swerved into the wall at the end of the main straight to exit early in the session.

Vettel leads Button by 60 points going into Sunday’s race, with the German driver having won five of seven GPs this season.
