The Victorian state government said it also had options to extend the contract for the event at Phillip Island until 2026.

“We are delighted to be announcing the contract extension today,” Australian MotoGP chief executive Drew Ward said.

“The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is regarded as one of the best events on the MotoGP calendar and we are very much looking forward to October.”

The New South Wales government had indicated it was interested in poaching key sporting events — including the Australian Grand Prix and MotoGP — from Victoria and its capital Melbourne.

However, Melbourne will host the Formula One Grand Prix until 2015 and the Australian Open tennis tournament will stay in the city until at least 2036.

The 2010 Motorcycle Grand Prix will be the sixteenth running at the Phillip island circuit, with Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, Nicky Hayden and Casey Stoner likely to compete at the October 15-17 event.
