Veteran Bollywood scriptwriter Salim Khan rushed to hospital

Veteran Bollywood screenwriter Salim Khan, 90, has been admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Khan is the writer of cult classics such as Sholay, Deewar and Zanjeer. He is also the father of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan.

"He (Salim Khan) has been admitted to Lilavati Hospital this morning. He is in the ICU," a hospital insider was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.

Salim Khan's family is yet to issue a statement on his health.

The reason why Salim Khan was admitted to hospital isn't immediately clear. Videos of Salman Khan leaving the hospital on Tuesday morning were widely shared on social media.

Salman's sister Alvira Khan, brother-in-law Aayush Sharma, and Ayaan Agnihotri also arrived to see the ailing Salim Khan.

Salim Khan celebrated his 90th birthday in November 2025 with his family. At the time, his daughter Arpita shared a photograph on Instagram, recalling his legacy in Bollywood.

Salim forms one half of Bollywood's legendary screenwriting duo of Salim-Javed, who wrote many a blockbuster in the 1970s and 80s. Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar were among India's first Indian screenwriters to get billing on a par with the big stars. To this day, they are regarded as among Hindi cinema's greatest screenwriters.

Salim-Javed created the angry young archetype, best personified on screen by Amitabh Bachchan.
