Mohanlal's Drishyam 3, touted as the finale to his critically acclaimed crime thriller franchise, has found a new release date: the birthday of its protagonist.

"The past never stays silent... it only waits. Georgekutty arrive, May 21, 2026," the award-winning actor and Malayalam superstar wrote on social media, announcing the new release date.

Directed by Jeethu Joseph, who helmed the first two instalments of the film franchise as well, Drishyam 3 was slated to release on April 2.

The significance of the new release date was not lost on anyone, least off all Mohanlal's fans. May 21 is the actor's birthday and his latest post removed all doubt.

The movie's crew had amped up expectations around the movie in no small measure.

At a public function in July last year, Joseph said he heaved a sigh of relief after penning the movie's script following a gruelling round-the-clock schedule of juggling screen-writing and filming other projects. At the time, Joseph was also working on projects such as Mirage, a thriller starring Asif Ali and Aparna Balamurali, and Valathu Vashathe Kallan, with Biju Menon and Joju George in the lead.

The director had also indicated that it was Mohanlal who had prompted him to write Drishyam 3, soon after the success of Drishyam 2 (2021). “Though I was not sure about what to say at that time, I told him that if we ever went for another sequel, I wish for the climax to be crafted in a particular way. I shared my thoughts with him,” he had said in an interview.

In January this year, Joseph, while commenting on the movies' cultural impact, had speculated at an April release.

Drishyam is a movie that has influenced lots of people... So, without too many expectations, you may watch the movie in the first week of April in the theatres," he had said at a function in Kochi.
