As the week of love dawns bright and clear, we bring you the fate of the love affairs in Bollywood
AND THE winner is DDLJ! Say cheers to love and yourself, for you helped us zero in on the most romantic scene in Bollywood in recent times.
While a whopping 38 per cent of our readers declared that DDLJ's Raj lords over their hearts, specifically where he asks Simran (Kajol) to Palat, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai came in a close second, garnering 19 per cent of the votes. King Khan rules?
But that's not to say the the ex real-life couple Kareena and Shahid's on-screen love saga did not strum the heartstrings. In fact, giving tough competition to Anjali and Rahul's ball-dance in the rain was Geet and Aditya's impromptu hug, with 16 per cent of our readers vouching for it.
So what made these scenes strike a chord with the viewers? Industry experts enlighten us on what all went into making the following, some of the most romantic scenes Bollywood gave its fans.
The big 'turn'around
The palat scene from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has reached the top echelons of romance. When the writer of the film Javed Siddiqi was informed about it, he laughed agreeing, "When we created this scene we never thought of it's stupendous success.
"This scene was the climax of all the leg-pulling that happened between Raj and Simran, prior to it. There was no chance of them falling in love, most of the audience was thinking, 'what's going to happen next?'.
"So Simran turning around to look at Raj was not only an answer to whatever was going on in his mind, but also to the audience who was inquisitively tuned into it." He concludes, "Palat is Raj's faith in his love, Simran."
We met to wed
Even though their real-life capers might have gone kaput, Kareena and Shahid managed to create a memorable romantic moment on screen. Jab we Met's director Imtiaz Ali shares, "I have seen this movie with different people, and each time this scene flashed on screen, I could hear the voluble cries, especially from the women.
"Perhaps because every woman has gone through this phase. Geet seems to be abusing on their behalf!" According to him, the scene is romantic because, "It brings Geet back, who got lost in despair. And it's Aditya (Shahid) who helps her get back by encouraging her to abuse her ex."
Sense of a woman
The audience melted when Nandini (Aishwarya) discovered true love in the arms of husband Vanraj (Ajay Devgan) after globetrotting in search of Samir (Salman).
But according to cinematographer of the Hum Dil De...Anil Mehta, "It's never a scene in isolation, but the film on the whole, that counts. It's remarkable people still remember the scene from the film."
Remembering the scene, he adds, "It was shot at night on the bridge in Budapest, so the location too added to its romanticism. More importantly, we see a woman's decision driven by the search for true love. We discover the liberty of making a choice when she has to decide with whom to spend her life. It's the high point of the film, and is extremely dramatic where there is realisation of true love."
Sensuality is the key
Rahul (SRK again!) lured Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) towards himself with her kangan as the bait, and the audience drew a sigh! According to Tanuja Chandra, who gave the screenplay for Dil to Pagaal Hai, "The scene was really sexy, sensuality flowed without even once crossing the thin line towards vulgarity.
The chemistry between SRK and Madhuri was amazing enough to ignite the romance. One could easily sense their longing for each other, and their helplessness of being in love. Both combined to make it one of the most romantic scenes."
Long live the loveSparks flew when Rahul and Anjali took shelter from rain in KKHH. The lovestruck couple danced into the audience's hearts, as they swung to imagined lovenotes, till Kajol realised her commitment to Salman in the bling of her ring.
