Lailaa O Lailaa gets average response

Critics have been unkind to Lailaa O Lailaa, the new film starring Mohanlal and Amala Paul, directed by Joshiy and scripted by Suresh Nair. The masses however haven't been too critical and the film met with average success at theatres in Kerala.

Following the success of Run Baby Run, with the same lead pair and director, but written by Sachi, the film came with tremendous expectations. It was billed as one of the most entertaining movies of the year and stories were floated on how expats based in the region 'equity crowdsourced' the funds to make it.

But much of the excitement fizzled out on day one, when news was out that the film is a rather timid adaptation of the James Cameron-directed True Lies.

Also starring Sathyaraj, Rahul Dev and Joy Mathew, Lailaa O Lailaa narrates the story of Jai Mohan, an officer on a secret mission, his true identity unrevealed even to his wife. No wonder then that Anjali Menon, his wife, played by Amala Paul, turns out to be a major irritant (another factor that has piqued critics who found her performance too grating for the film's good).

While Suresh Nair's attempt to bring some Bollywood-like fun and adventure to Malayalam cinema might not have hit the target, the film does not make any pretension about its genre as a racy adventure that does not seek to address logic and reason.

With some heavy duty action, Lailaa O Lailaa, therefore, might appeal to those who visit the theatres with no great expectations but some breezy moments of fun, cheer and action by Mohanlal.
