The producer of Thalapathy Vijay's film Jana Nayagan has withdrawn a writ petition filed against India's film censor board, the Central Board of Film Certification, filed in the Madras High Court
The counsel for KVN Productions, the production house bankrolling the film, informed the Madras High Court Registry that the production house intends to withdraw its writ petition.
Advocate Vijayan Subramanian submitted the letter on behalf of the production house.
Jana Nayagan was planned for release on January 9 and is being touted as Vijay's last film. The actor has launched his political party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and will be contesting the upcoming Assembly elections in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu in April.
The film ran into trouble when the CBFC decided to hold back its certification on the grounds that certain scenes in the movie could hurt religious sentiments.
A judge then asked the CBFC to give the film a U/A 16+ certificate—or unrestricted public exhibition, but with parental discretion for children below 16—which brought short-term relief.
The CBFC later moved a division bench of the High Court, which stayed the single judge's order on January 9.
This led the producers to approach India's Supreme Court, asking for an urgent stay on the High Court's decision. However, the apex court refused to intervene.
