'I've stepped up a notch'
WHEN DONITA Rose came home to Manila after nine years of living and working in Singapore, it was a big risk on her part. But fortunately, says Donita, it has turned out to be the right decision.

For the past six months, Donita has been co-hosting the morning show Umagang Kay Ganda. According to the now 30-year-old but still very lovely host and actress, although her new show has her getting up every morning at 3AM, she is so loving what she does that it doesn't seem like work. For the first time, she is part of a show that does more than just require her to look good or act funny while introducing music videos, like she did during her MTV days. She likes the format for Umagang Kay Ganda, which blends information with entertainment. The show touches on everything from fitness and health to showbusiness, from politics to parenting issues.
“I've stepped up a notch,” she says. “Now I'm really using my brain and not just having to look good on TV. When I was younger, it was different, but I'm a full-grown adult now, besides being a wife and mother. I'm more secure in who I am, so that brings something new to the equation. This is a new phase of my life.”

One of the biggest adjustments she's had to make, says Donita, was learning to work with a team. When she was still an MTV VJ, she was used to working alone. She would go into the studio and tape her spiels in front of a camera, introduce the videos, interview a few artists, and that was that. Now, on Umagang Kay Ganda, there is more interaction between Donita and her co-hosts, as well as between Donita and their guests.This is what she means when she says that she now gets to use her brain. “Even during my MTV days, I was always a one-man show. So when I got the offer to do Umagang Kay Ganda and they told me I was going to be working with this big team, I was kind of worried [about the adjustment process],” explains Donita. “But they said, 'Don't worry; we'll help you.' I love the team I work with. They've made everything so much easier for me.”
