IF THERE IS someone in your life who deserves a pat on the back for their inspiring goodness and unwavering generosity?

If so, you can nominate them for this year's Abu Dhabi Awards, which celebrate compassionate individuals who have contributed to the community spirit and social welfare of Abu Dhabi.

Now in its fifth edition, the annual ceremony is a result of the commitment of the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to preserve the legacy of the nation's late father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

In the last four years, there have been a whopping 140,000 nominations and 37 recipients.

The nomination period, meanwhile, is designed to harness the spirit of generosity and giving of the Holy Month of Ramadan – before the official event later this year.

There are five ways to submit a nomination:

Awards are presented on the basis of merit, which means every single nomination is considered, with the awards open to all members of the public regardless of age, gender or nationality.

“By nominating, we have the opportunity to give thanks to those among us whose work may otherwise go unnoticed,” said Maryam Amiri from the awards organising committee. “And through the act of expressing our appreciation, we can also inspire others to share their goodwill.”

The nomination period is open until the 27th September, followed by an extensive judging process by a panel of senior government officials. Recipients will be announced at a ceremony in December to be held at the Emirates Palace.
