'Don 3' dispute: Makers to take legal route after Ranveer Singh exit?

The fallout between the 'Dhurandhar' star and the makers intensifies as the Producers Guild fails to mediate a hefty compensation dispute

Back in August 2023, the news of Ranveer Singh being cast as the lead in Farhan Akhtar’s directorial Don 3 created quite a stir. However, what began as a headline-grabbing casting announcement has now evolved into a formal industry standoff — one that could soon move from closed-door mediation to the courtroom.
The much-anticipated action franchise found itself at the centre of controversy late last year when Singh, who had been announced as the face of the next installment following Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic run, reportedly stepped away from the project after months of pre-production.
While early chatter pointed to creative differences — particularly around the evolving script — the fallout has since taken on a financial dimension.
According to industry reports, the film’s production house, Excel Entertainment, has sought compensation estimated at around ₹40 crore (roughly Dh18 million), citing substantial investments already made in development, planning and schedules tailored to Singh’s involvement.
The actor’s team, however, is said to have contested both the liability and the scale of the demand. Sources suggest an earlier proposal for a smaller goodwill payment towards pre-production costs was floated but later withdrawn as the compensation figure remained unchanged.
In an effort to resolve the matter within industry channels, both sides reportedly approached the Producers Guild of India for informal mediation.
However, with neither side willing to revise their position, the mediation process appears to have reached a deadlock. The Guild has now reportedly advised both parties to pursue the matter through legal avenues, effectively stepping back from further involvement.
What happens next
The move does not necessarily mean the dispute is heading straight to court, but it does signal a shift from internal industry negotiation to a more formal commercial process.
For now, Don 3 remains caught in uncertainty. Whether the situation ends in a settlement or develops into a public legal battle is still unclear. What is certain, however, is that the journey to bringing the next Don to screens has become far more complicated than anyone anticipated.
