The Abu Dhabi Police recorded 30,606 violations related to distracted driving in 2020. The police have posted a shocking video that highlights the dangers posed by the practice.
The penalty for the offence is Dh800 and four black points. Distracted driving causes sudden lane changes and leads to accidents, the police said.
According to the police, drivers are distracted as they use the phone for social media posts or to make a call. Some even take photos or videos as they drive.
Other reasons include sipping a beverage while driving; applying make-up; adjusting clothes; changing radio channels; and drivers turning to their companions for a chat.
