Ministry accredits 34 schools

The Ministry of Education (MoE) announced the accreditation of 34 schools in its second phase of school accreditation for 2010-2011. Humaid Obaid Al Qattami, Minister of Education, honored the principals of the schools accredited during a ceremony organised by the MoE.

In his opening address, the minister said: “School administrations are determined to elevate the quality of education and the teachers are more aware of the change the educational field is going through.”

He added, “Today we celebrate a list of additional accredited schools which represent the second phase, so that our schools will have better environment and equipment, not only for the students but to all school workers who strive to raise the educational level in their schools.”

He also mentioned that educational expertise is a major factor in the success of the development efforts of the MoE.

Green coursesfor students

The Heriot-Watt University in Dubai has announced the commencement of three new degrees for students interested in environmental education. The Energy MSc course, Architectural Engineering and Water Resources programmes will commence from September this year.

The architectural engineering course will provide students with exposure to sustainable construction with a focus on studying the environmental impact of urban buildings and the development of green buildings.

The water resources degree will be a one-year full-time course, or an optional 2-3 year part-time course. The new degree will be lead by Professor Garry Pender, renowned water expert, and the course has already garnered interest from a number of political consultants.

Meet on education of autistic kids

A one-day conference on education for autistic students will be held in Dubai on Wednesday to discuss making mainstream schools autism-friendly. Prof. Rita R. Jordan, Professor Emeritus in Autism Studies, Birmingham University, UK, and Dr Heather MacKenzie, best selling author, speech-language pathologist and educator from Canada will speak at the event.

Prof. Jordan will present a paper titled “Educational Provision: Making mainstream schools autism-friendly and inclusion”.
