Since its launch at the beginning of the academic year in September 2018, more than 400 students have become ambassadors as part of the Expo 2020 Dubai Champions programme. The team is keen for more to come on board.

Created by the Expo School Programme, students from every school in the UAE are being encouraged to raise awareness about the milestone event, which will kick off on October 20, 2020. So if you're young and you want to become a spokesperson among your peers for Expo 2020 Dubai, then let your teacher know.

Additionally, 74 volunteer teachers in the UAE have helped develop a number of online learning materials, which will complement the daily lesson routine in schools. Designed to engage students on the journey to 2020, it's another way the team is exposing the youth to their important role in Expo 2020 Dubai.

Fun facts: World Expo Inventions

> 1893, Chicago (US): Do you remember tasting ketchup for the first time? This is what happened at the Chicago World Expo in 1893, when Henry John Heinz offered a free taste to anyone who visited his stand. Thousands of people took him up on his offer and that's how Heinz Tomato Ketchup became famous.

> 1904, St Louis (US): The ice cream cone was invented at 1904 World Expo. When an ice cream vendor ran out of cups, Syrian waffle maker Ernest Hamwi had the bright idea of rolling up his waffles - and the ice cream cone was born.

> 1970, Osaka (Japan): Thousands of visitors were amazed by the very first mobile phone, which was showcased at the Japan World Expo in Osaka. This wireless device was called the 'Dream Telephone' and could make calls to anywhere in Japan.
The free-to-use resources explore topics of the future within the context of the Expo's theme 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future'.

Teachers are being urged to design their lesson plans with the resources, which focus on three key subthemes of 'opportunity, mobility and sustainability'.

During a tour of the Expo 2020 Dubai Visitor Centre on Wednesday, Alya Al Ali, director of the Expo School Programme, told Khaleej Times that the facility - designed to accommodate field trips in the run-up to and during the event - has so far welcomed about 2,000 students.

"We receive about 60 to 100 students per day. We launched the Expo School Programme to engage with the school community. Students are the future and World Expos are all about knowing what their future looks like. This centre is here to spark that curiosity in them."

With just over 90 weeks to go until the launch of the first World Expo in the Middle East, Keyaan Bukhari, a Grade 5 student, is encouraging his peers to get involved.

"We students are the ones driving the future. This centre gives us the practical experience about why we need to get excited about Expo 2020 Dubai. It explains the importance of World Expos in a digestible way for kids my age, and that helps us understand how it's impacting us directly," said Bukhari who studies at the Kindergarten Starters.

The visitor centre offers hands-on educational experiences for schools to help broaden their students' horizons. Al Ali said that by developing new experiences and new content around the World Expo, it will hold the attention of the youth.

"Once they visit the centre, I think they'll want to become an Expo 2020 Dubai Champion. By being a Champion they will become like ambassadors and will be encouraged to talk about it, present it to peers, their communities, and their parents. It will keep the discussion going."
