Another life has been lost in the clash of racial narratives in the US. Black lives matter versus back the blue - the divide in Trump's America hasn't ever appeared as stark as it does now. The country has become dramatically confrontational, a sign of a society so polarised that it is not willing to listen to counter arguments and come to a sensible meeting point. It wants to take the debate several notches higher by making the point heard through guns, violence and riots. There is no civility left in the discourse as people take to the streets and seek attention through violence, vandalism, and theft.
Lives matter, whether it is of a Black or a Brown or a White. We know and understand that. We don't just follow it. Yet, in American households today the schism is sharp. The recurring themes in the political discourse especially during this election season are bed-rocked in racism issues. Not all Americans have benefitted from the stellar progress that the country has made in the past decades. That's a bitter truth. A large population of the Black community continues to live in fear because of discrimination. They are economically less accomplished than the counterparts among the White Americans. The White population too has its own set of grouses.
Racism is widespread, from corporate boardrooms to basic rights, and is arguably the root cause of the violence that has gripped parts of the country. It will take more than a few words at a convention to prove that the government is doing all it can to work in the best interests of all. Trump has stoked divisions in the US and done little to bridge the rift. Perhaps, building a 'United America' would make the country more prosperous than pursuing 'America first'.
