Muddying the waters is an integral part of politics. Donald Trump did it with Barack Obama by sending out the message that he was a Kenyan and not American enough and then had to retract. Much in the same way he also repeated the folly with Vice Presidential Democrat candidate Kamala Harris over her antecedents. The idea was to create doubt and when otherwise serious media outlets do pick up the story and begin to analyse this aspect, as if it was hugely germane to the candidate's integrity and eligibility per se, apologies in the aftermath do not eliminate the bitter taste.
Surely, all this was put into the mix when Harris was vetted for the Presidential spot. Section 1 of the US Constitution's 14th Amendment reads: "All persons born or naturalised in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." That Harris was born in Oakland, California and she is not an immigrant in that sense. Come to think of it except for indigenous native Indians everyone in the US is an immigrant.
