Solutions to combating the Covid-19 pandemic are no mystery, then why are we not doing it right? Why has there been a steady rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in the UAE when the authorities have been sending clear and consistent messages, and the media has been funnelling credible information through their channels? No effort has been spared, and yet the Emirates has registered a new high in the number of Covid-19 cases at 1,315. There has been a steady increase in the number of cases since the UAE flattened the curve in July. Are we taking comfort in the high number of recoveries, or is it plain submission to sterile thought that everyone will eventually get sickened by the virus? Both points are debatable.
While recoveries are rising, we are also learning about the long-term impact on the health of patients even after they have been tested negative. Second, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from getting infected by following basic safety rules. The UAE government has been aggressive in fighting the pandemic. While people in some western countries have to drive for hours to reach a test centre, here we have access to many in our communities. Even in malls now. Prevention is the key. Wash your hands frequently or sanitise, keep that mask on, maintain social distance, and avoid gatherings that are turning into superspreading events and driving the pandemic the world over.
