Praise for the frontline in the war against Covid-19 is not just warranted and well-deserved, it is also evidence of the UAE being a model for the rest of the world in handling the pandemic and tamping the lid on the numbers. There was a concerted, well-thought-out plan and it was initiated and calibrated in such a fashion as to ensure maximum containment. While the medical establishment more than rose to the occasion, it must also be recorded that the public stood steadfast and supportive and followed the rules. To a large extent those who felt they could buck the togetherness and do their own thing found themselves ostracised and literally shunned by friends who understood the need to be safe and keep their loved ones protected.
Even as one writes this piece, it is a sobering thought that the highest number of people tested positive in a 24-hour cycle this Saturday at 294,000 indicates that the surge has not abated in many countries and new infections are spiking again. These are reason to keep the guard up and maintain vigilance because the war is far from over and the speed from twenty to twenty-one million has been very rapid. Europe is hurting again and the virus is like a mix of malevolent whack-a-mole and a hydra-headed monster rolled into one.
