Community living is not easy and only a few are fortunate to have good neighbours whom they can rely on. And quite a few have neighbours whose nuisance value far exceeds their offers of comfort. From noise pollution to washing on the line to leaky air conditioners and a marked lack of consideration can make life pretty miserable. In keeping with its policies of creating a visually decent vista, the Abu Dhabi government has made a right move in issuing alerts to over 5,000 residents to remove their stuff from rooftops where they make an ugly mess. The ubiquitous TV dishes and the snaking wires entwined through windows and grills do make an ungainly sight and a cityscape becomes a nightmare of steel nests. All too often it is not just the congested rooftops that are an eyesore. The windows and balconies are also turned into dumps and it is scarcely edifying to seeing limply tied dishes on window grills.
In a nation dedicated to tolerance, the concept of neighbourliness is a reasonable adjunct. And one of the prerequisites is to ensure that the façade of a home, be it an apartment, a villa or a semi-detached abode, has a pristine and neat appearance that contributes positively to the ambiance of the locality. It is hoped the 5,000 who have been given this call will heed it.
