Flexible working hours are the way to go during and, perhaps, after the pandemic. Four months have taught us that virtual is practical, and even cost effective. It cleaned up the air with fewer people going out during lockdowns and travel restrictions. Stay at home advisories have been good for the environment we live in and given us breathing space to think of solutions. Now that life has returned to a simpler normal, Dubai's plan to offer flexible work options to its government workforce is an innovative and unique measure. Staff can choose to start any time between 6.30am and 8.30am from next week as long as they complete their contracted hours. Caution remains in place, but it's a practical measure that could boost productivity while giving staff a sense of confidence.
The move towards flexible hours in office could make staff efficient as they could finish their assigned tasks well or ahead of time. Virtual world could also come into play, and in some cases, employees might not need to make that trip to office. It is indeed an employee-friendly measure that private companies in the emirate and across the UAE could consider emulating and making a success. The future of work is changing and the UAE is leading the change.
