A flag is one of the most powerful symbols of a country. To think of it as just a piece of cloth would be a travesty of reason, of nationalism. Symbolic of the ideals of a nation, when a flag is hoisted, a look at it inspires pride, patriotism, and belonging. The importance of it is surely more pronounced in the UAE, where it is not just the nationals who bow to the flag in allegiance, but also millions of residents that respect and care for the nation just as much. The unfurling of the four colours invokes solidarity, spirit of oneness that transcends all differences and brings together everyone as one. At a time when some societies in the West are grappling with issues of integration of different communities, the UAE is an epitome of communal harmony, where residents from 200 countries live together in peace and call this country their second home. The intolerance of the leadership towards any sort of discrimination, their principled stand on respecting all religions and humanity in general have guided the UAE to become what it is today.

Religious and racial discrimination is a hate crime here, and come to think of it shouldn’t it be the case in every country that strives to spread and live by the message of amicability? At 11am today, the UAE flag will be hoisted at government buildings, schools, and residences throughout the country. Many a celebration might go virtual or be muted in the wake of the pandemic, but it will be a solemn occasion for the young ones and grown-ups alike, reminding them of the opportunities afforded to us by this land.
