The commissioning of the Barakah nuclear plant in the UAE and its operations point to the growing awareness among policymakers of taking decisive actions which will ensure that our future energy requirements are met in a way that protect and enhance the quality of the environment.
Climate change is a serious threat and the UAE, through specific projects like this, has shown that it is ahead of the curve when compared with other countries that have not given the issue the seriousness that it deserves.
The Barakah nuclear plant is the first in the Arab world, and the experience in running it will help a host of other countries in the region. It has crossed another major milestone after connecting to the UAE power grid. This has been a happily ambitious journey and will now provide up to 25 per cent of the UAE's electricity needs with zero carbon emissions.
Nuclear power provides around 11 per cent of the world's electricity, with the Middle East contributing less than one per cent. This nuclear plant will add to the growing debate on the need to decrease carbon emissions and will inspire more countries to adopt a form of energy that is carbon-free and scalable.
