Don't delete messages from your bank

December last year I'd received a promotion message from a local bank offering a 10 per cent cashback on dining from December 1 to January 30 period, up to a maximum of Dh300. I had applied for the offer by sending a message to the bank, and used the card accordingly as I dined at various restaurants.
Normally the cash back is credited after 60 days at the end of the promotion. However, this time the money wasn't credited to my account. It has been 75 days. So, I called up the call centre to enquire, and to my surprise they asked me to show the SMS to confirm that I'd registered for the offer. Now I don't have that message; I had deleted all messages to save some storage space in my phone. I've lost my cashback, and learnt a lesson: to carefully vet all messages from banks and don't rush to delete them. -Kailash Sajnani, Dubai
