The woman, a 32-year-old British fitness instructor, told the prosecutor that she was jogging that night when a man, the defendant, grabbed and pulled her to a sandy area off the road.

There he pushed her down and tried to assault her, but she managed to escape.

An Indian driver reported finding personal and banking cards belonging to the complainant in a plastic bag near a shop on Manara Street.

An Emirati police sergeant said they tracked the defendant about three weeks after receiving the complaint.

They found his fingerprints on the woman’s cards. He admitted that he was intending to make money by selling the woman’s personal belongings. Her mobile phone and bag were found at the man’s place.

The accused had been involved in a similar case in Abu Dhabi.

He admitted that he tried to rape the woman. Another police sergeant quoted the accused as saying that the woman’s exposed legs made him commit the act.
