Two women have gone on trial in Abu Dhabi after being accused of getting pregnant through illicit relationships.

The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance on Tuesday heard that the Ethiopian and Filipino women had illicit sex and got pregnant.

The women are being tried in separate cases.

Official court documents stated that police had arrested the women, both Abu Dhabi residents, after getting information that they were pregnant despite them not being married.

After investigations and confirming that the women were pregnant, the pair was referred to court.

Prosecutors charged the women with getting pregnant through illicit affairs.

The Ethiopian woman, a divorcee, had earlier admitted to the charge during her interview by the prosecution - but denied the charge in court. She is in detention and came to court with her baby.

She told the judge that she had earlier been married and that her husband who is back home made her pregnant before they separated.

"I didn't have an illicit affair with anyone," she said.

The judge asked her to appoint a lawyer who would represent her in future hearings.

The Filipino woman, an unmarried Muslim, admitted to the charge of having a baby through an illicit relationship when she appeared before the judge.

"I am not married. I got pregnant after having sex with my boyfriend," said the Filipina.

The trials were adjourned until October 9.
