Dubai - High tension prevailed for hours at a gated community in Dubai on Saturday, following a suicide bid by a young Brazilian woman, who tried to jump through the window of an eighth floor apartment.

The incident took place at one of the building blocks in the Al Khail Gate community in Al Quoz. The woman, RA, aged 26, apparently staged the drama to get the police involved in solving a fight with her Lebanese partner.

Eyewitnesses told Khaleej Times that the woman was spotted standing outside the windows of the apartment shortly after 8am. The security guard at her building saw her first.

“At first, she threw some tea bags down. I thought some kids were throwing them. As I looked up I saw clothes and other things flying down and this woman was screaming security...security,” the guard said.Among the things she threw down were the glass-framed photo of Mother Mary with Arabic script written on it, a pair of very old high-heeled sandals and a mobile phone.

The guard said her boyfriend also came down to the parking lot and repeatedly told her not to jump and get back to the apartment, which she had locked from inside.

“She told me to call the police and get him arrested. She also asked me to do weird things like… remove his shirt and take it to her…She did not listen to me when I kept telling her to open the door and we will find some solution,” he said.

A resident, who was present at the scene, said it was obvious that the woman did not want to jump but she could have lost balance and fallen anytime.“I moved away since I didn’t want to witness her falling to death,” he said.

However, many other residents from nearby buildings gathered soon as the police and ambulance had rushed in to the spot. The rescue team of the Dubai Police tried to convince the woman not to jump through an adjacent window of the corridor. Several vehicles belonging to the police, ambulance, rescue team and civil defence were deployed at the building’s premises as the negotiations with the woman went on.

The Dubai Police said that a specialised team held the negotiation with the woman and after a long time they convinced her not to jump from the window and open the door.

The police found the woman in a hysteric condition and rushed her to the Shaikh Rashid Hospital. She was given necessary treatments at the hospital and was taken to the Bur Dubai Police Detention Centre. Later, she told the police she had an heated argument with the man on some personal and financial matters.

When he abused and insulted her, she got angry, pushed him outside and locked the door. The police charged her with attempt to commit suicide and consumption of alcohol.
