Three Asian residents sustained serious injuries and fractures after their car rammed a stationary truck after driver lost control over the steering wheel in the Gasidat area of Ras Al Khaimah on Saturday evening.
The injured were all drunk, according to a police source.
“The police were alerted of the mishap which took place behind Cars Garage in Gasidat around 4.50pm,” the source said.
Traffic patrols, an ambulance and rescue teams rushed to the scene and took the injured persons to the nearest hospital, he added. “The preliminary investigation showed that the three people in the car, including the driver, were all under the influence of alcohol.”
The car was totally damaged. “The truck driver was not responsible for the mishap. He had parked the truck properly on the roadside.”
Driving under the influence of alcohol is a criminal offence in the UAE and there is a zero-tolerance policy.
“Driving under the influence draws a jail term of one month to three years and/or a fine of Dh20,000 to Dh30,000. The offending driver will also get 24 black points, and the vehicle will be impounded for 60 days,” he stated.
Besides, if a driver under the influence is involved in an accident, he will not get insurance benefits.
