Survey reveals significant challenges in attracting skilled talent
An accommodation supervisor is in the dock for allegedly soliciting and accepting Dh700 bribe from a taxi driver in return for finalising a transaction he had requested from him.
According to prosecution records, the 39-year-old Egyptian was the supervisor in the workplace accommodation where the Indian driver lived in Jebel Ali.
The driver approached the supervisor-clerk to finalise and okay a request that he be moved to another private accommodation.
The clerk allegedly claimed to him that he could issue him, with the help of another employee, the approval even if his application was not complete — as it lacked his new tenancy contract document. He requested he be paid Dh700 for the favour.
He has been charged with soliciting and collecting a bribe in the Court of First Instance.
He was arrested on August 6 in a sting operation after he allegedly collected bribe from an undercover officer of the Dubai Police.
A police lieutenant said that he was part of the team that arrested the accused at around 10am in Al Muhaisna. “We received information that the accused was abusing his post and soliciting bribes from taxi drivers who wished to move out from the accommodation provided by their workplace to some other place. We learnt that the accused would claim to the drivers — who submitted such applications — that their requests had been denied by the management, and that in order to get their applications passed, they should pay him Dh700,” the officer said.
In case the request was approved, Dh400 would have to be added to the driver’s monthly salary.
The lieutenant said that they had been tipped off by an informer who worked at the same place where the accused worked.
“The accused would keep some requests on hold and then would approach the drivers soliciting them to pay him Dh700 if they want to re-locate to a new accommodation”.
