The suspect, who moved between Ras Al Khaimah and Dubai, was finally caught after he burgled a house that has been registered under the Dubai Police Home Safety Programme.

Many houses in Ras Al Khaimah, particularly in the Al Rams area, were targeted by the suspect. In cooperation with the Ras Al Khaimah authorities, the Dubai Police arrested the thief.

The suspect would target properties when the owners were away on holiday. He hid the stolen goods in the spare tyre compartment of his car. The suspect had been working as a driver for the last four years.

Lt-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, ordered the establishment of the House Safety Programme to prevent burglaries from homes that were left vacant during the summer holidays. He said that since the programme was launched, no theft cases have been reported by those who have signed up for the free initiative.

Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, said the thief was caught when a police patrol spotted a dim light in a house of someone who has joined the Home Safety Programme. The police had asked members of the programme to inform them if they are going on holiday, and the occupants of the house in Al Qusais had gone on holiday ten days before the incident.

The police notified the Criminal Investigation Department whose personnel rushed to the house and found evidence of a disturbance. The police called the house owner who said that he had given a key of the house only to his friend. The police entered the house and found items scattered around as well as a broken cupboard. Jewellery, money and electronics were missing.

Within two hours of the theft, the police had passed on the information and issued a circular to authorities in all emirates.

The police noticed that the thief had used the same technique employed in the 70 thefts reported in Ras Al Khaimah. It had also been noticed that after 14 hours of committing the theft, the suspect’s friend would try to sell some stolen electronics.

Colonel Salem Al Rumaithi, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigation, said when the police searched the house of the suspect’s friend, they found that he had been buying electronics from the suspect and sell them. The suspected thief was arrested while attempting to leave Dubai emirate with another person.

Col Al Rumaithi said the analysis of theft techniques was coordinated throughout the UAE. The Ministry of Information also helps detect the thieves though many thieves believe they can evade arrest by travelling to another emirate.

He said the police have seized the suspect’s car and arrested his companion who said he did not know about the thefts.
