A woman has been accused of forging a status certificate to obtain support funds from the UAE Red Crescent in Abu Dhabi.
Her father and husband have also been accused of aiding and abetting the crime, as per Al Bayan report.
The woman testified before the court that "The third accused (her husband) had married her but had not consummated the marriage. When I signed the affidavit (confirming her status as single), I had no idea it would be considered a crime."
She added that according to cultural custom, if the marriage was not consummated, she is still considered "engaged" and therefore single.
Her claim was that she hadn't received any monetary gain from the affidavit and therefore had no incentive to forge it.
The father of the first accused, who is also jailed for illegal residency, claimed he had no relation to the criminal act. He also defended his illegal residency by saying he had come to the UAE looking for a job and had overstayed his visa. He was hoping to avail of the amnesty scheme.
The third accused is a fugitive of the law.
The court adjourned the case to September 26 to pronounce the verdict.
