An Abu Dhabi court has ordered a man to pay his wife Dh30,000 in compensation for what she had been through after getting hit and insulted repeatedly at home.
The woman had reported the case of domestic violence to the authorities, claiming that her husband would always kick and beat her black and blue, court records show. She said the man would also “insult her in front of other people in a manner that undermined her honour”.
“The insults hurt my feelings and had damaged my reputation among family and friends,” the complainant said.
When the Court of First Instance found the man guilty of assaulting and insulting his wife, the woman filed another lawsuit demanding that he pay her Dh400,000 for the physical, moral and material damages she suffered.
The man denied the charges and asked court to dismiss the case, stressing that the allegation was baseless.
The Abu Dhabi Civil Court of First Instance had earlier ordered the husband to pay Dh20,000 to his wife as compensation. She challenged the ruling and the appeal court increased the compensation to Dh30,000, in addition to the legal expenses.
