A 53-year-old man stood trial in the Court of First Instance on Monday on the charge of possessing fake dollar bills which he intended to circulate.
According to prosecution records, as many as 784 bills worth each $100 were seized from the defendant, an unemployed Sudanese, on May 6.
A Dubai customs inspector said that he was on duty on May 6 at Hatta check point when he searched the defendant's car and found a money bag which the accused claimed contained $35,000.
"I found a bag full with $100 bills. I suspected the bills were fake when I checked one," the officer said during the public prosecution investigation.
When asked by the inspector, the accused admitted the money was his.
The accused was then booked for further legal procedure.
The bills seized from the defendant were showed to two money exchange offices there and both confirmed the money was counterfeit.
As per a report from the General Department of Criminal Evidence, the seized bills were fake in a way that could fool common people.
The accused has been placed in detention pending a trial.
The next hearing is set for October 20.
