The officials, however, did not give the exact quantity of cocaine seized, since it was spread on the clothes.

Major-General Abdul Jalil Mehdi, Director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics at the Dubai Police, said the anti-drug officials at the Dubai International Airport managed to discover the drug although the smuggler had used complicated and advanced techniques to smuggle it in.

During a Press conference, Mehdi said that the operation was successful because of the efficiency of the police forces. Giving details of the haul, he said that in June, the police received information that a 28-year-old university-educated Arab, MA, was travelling from Sao Paulo, Brazil, carrying a large amount of drugs, which he planned to smuggle through Dubai to Damascus. When the suspect arrived at the Dubai International Airport at the end of June, the police officials who had accurate information that he possessed drugs, monitored him. Once he completed the routine departure procedures, he appeared confident believing that his operation had succeeded. But he was surprised when the police stopped him and asked him to identify his bags. When the police opened the bags, they noticed a smell similar to cocaine.

The officials referred him to the anti-narcotic department of the Dubai Police and the suspect confessed that he was aware that the bags contained cocaine. He admitted that another suspect identified as HG had asked him to carry the bags from Sao Paulo to Damascus, in return for $5,000. He was told that when he reached Syria, someone would meet him to takeover the bags.

Mehdi praised the Dubai Police Anti-Narcotic Department for their vigilance and keenness in protecting the country. He also called up on the people to cooperate with the Dubai Police if they had any information on drug-related issues.
