A 45-year-old Emirati is on trial in court for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs.
According to prosecution records, he was speeding and driving recklessly, and hit a public transportation vehicle causing it to veer off the road and flip over.
The man is believed to have used different kinds of drugs and possessed heroin for personal use.
He has been charged in the Court of First Instance with using drugs and narcotics and possessing drugs for personal use, driving under the influence of drugs and damaging other's property.
The incident took place on August 22 in Rashidiyah. The defendant admitted during the public prosecution investigation that the seized drugs belonged to him.
He also admitted that he used drugs four days prior to the traffic accident. He claimed he entered the National Centre for Rehabilitation in Abu Dhabi and that he wanted to quit using drugs.
According to the Criminal Lab report, the urine sample of the defendant contained traces of morphine, codeine and other types of narcotics. A quantity of heroin weighing 0.22 grams was recovered from him.
