As many as 14 people were injured when 57 cars were involved in a pile-up on the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain highway today morning due to heavy fog.
The accident took place atAbu Samra, and, according to eye-witness accounts, the entire stretch of the highway between Al Sa’ad and Al Ramah was blocked with slow traffic flow because of the accident.
An official at Abu Dhabi Police told Khaleej Times a full report about the accident will be released to the media later in the day. The police department also released an alert to the media about the accident.
The accident also attracted a large number people from the nearby residential and industrial areas on the highway. However, they were dispersed by police personnel.
“It was extremely foggy when the accident happened this morning. I was also driving for work but visibility so poor that I could not even see for 100 metres. There could be casualties as some of the cars were badly damaged.
It was a pile-up accident involving probably 10 to 12 vehicles,” said Abdul Karim, a resident of nearby Al Khazna. He further added, he saw several ambulances, police and traffic patrols and many senior officers to help clear the highway. “Now the traffic flow is back to normal with highway cleared,” added Karim. nissar@khaleejtimes.com
