Major Ishaq Ahmed Mohammed, Director of Women and Children Protection Section at the Human Rights Department, received the grandfather when he approached the police.

He was concerned at the way his granddaughters, aged 6, 8 and 12, were treated. He was also touched by the recent reports of a young girl who died after being tortured by her father.

The grandfather said the court has now given him the custody of the three girls. The girls’ mother, the elderly man’s daughter, is dead and he says he is looking after the children because of the immoral behaviour of his son-in-law.

Ishaq said that the grandfather suspected the father’s behaviour when the girls used to visit him on Thursdays and Fridays.

Major Ishaq said the grandfather is taking care of them and takes them to school by himself despite one of them being a special needs girl. The grandfather confirmed that he will take care of the girls. He also took one of them to a well-known club for a training course and to exercise in self-defence.

The grandfather said that he “noticed very strange behaviour of the father that scared him and that he would not wait until something happened.”

Major Ishaq revealed that the police would conduct an investigation into the father’s behaviour and as a preventive measure, would let him see his daughters only at their grandfather’s house to ensure the safety of the girls.
