The Dubai Police have arrested five persons, including two Emirati brothers, in connection with a spate of theft cases reported from villas in Bur Dubai. In most of the cases, the occupants of the villas were away on vacation when they were burgled, the police said on Sunday.
In an earlier case, the mother of the two Emirati suspects had been jailed on charges of attempting to murder a policeman. She had stabbed an officer who had raided her house to arrest one of her sons in connection with a theft case.
According to police officials, they received several complaints from occupants of villas in Bur Dubai about burglary. In one case, an Australian informed the police that thieves had broken into his villa while he was away on vacation and made away with $34,000, diamonds and some jewellery from his safe. The thieves also broke into his BMW car, but did not find anything.
A security team was formed to investigate the cases. During the course of investigation, the police first arrested a 27-year-old GCC national, A.A.S., who allegedly specialised in stealing jewellery from safes in empty houses. Based on his interrogation, the police started monitoring the activities of a 28-year-old Emirati, A.Kh. He allegedly went to a gold market, accompanied by an Arab woman, identified as M.M., and tried to sell some gold there. When the salesman asked him to give an identification document, the duo fled, but they were photographed by security cameras.
On September 3, the police raided A.Kh.’s house in Al Warqa. A.Kh. and M.M. were arrested in the raid along with A.Kh’s brother and his wife, H.A. The police recovered some jewellery and watches in the raid. Some drugs were also recovered, the police said.
In September 2010, when the police raided A.Kh.’s house in Al Warqa after he was suspected of carrying out a theft worth Dh4 million, his mother and two brothers assaulted the officers. The mother also hid the bag containing the stolen valuables.
She then stabbed a male officer in his stomach and encouraged her sons to resist the officers. One of her sons took another knife and stabbed two other officers. The woman was released recently after serving her jail term.
