The Ajman Police arrested a gang of five African men after a tough chase in Al Swan area on Monday night for robbing a taxi driver at knifepoint at night, and not for breaking into a shop as reported by Khaleej Times on Wednesday.
The driver notified the police around 2.30am that he was robbed by the men who got in the taxi posing as passengers. The police immediately moved to the scene and surrounded the area, according to Brigadier Abdullah Al Matroushi, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at the Ajman Police.
They chased the men to a building under construction.
One of the men was already wanted by the police for similar crimes. Brig Al Matroushi appealed to taxi drivers to exercise caution especially when taking passengers at night.
An eyewitness said that four police cars had chased the suspects on the internal roads and some residents said they had heard gunshots being fired. The police cordoned off the area and urged local residents to stay indoors until all suspects were arrested.
