The Court of First Instance also ordered that the two unemployed defendants, aged 28 and 25, be deported after serving their prison term for attempted murder.
According to prosecution records, last June the two defendants followed the shop owner’s worker all the way from the bank to the construction parts shop in Naif, according to a plan they had devised in advance. While one of the defendants distracted the worker at the shop, the other shot the Indian shop owner in his chest in a bid to kill him and steal the money. But their attempt failed after the worker rushed to his boss’ rescue and the criminals fled the scene.
They were charged with premeditated attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and attempted robbery by using force.
The shop owner, 21, said that he had sent his Indian worker to the bank to collect a cheque of Dh164,750, as directed by his father in India.
The two defendants walked into the shop around 1pm. One of them distracted the worker by asking about goods and prices and asking to see some parts.
As the worker was upstairs, the other accused brandished a gun, which he was hiding under his shirt, and aimed at the owner asking him not to move and to hand over the money. Thinking the gun was not real, the owner moved from his place which led the accused to panic and shoot the latter, who then collapsed. The worker rushed to the owner’s help as he heard him screaming.
A police lieutenant said the bank’s CCTV footage showed the convicted men had followed the worker from the bank to the shop. Police arrested one of the defendants from his flat, where he was hiding inside an airconditioner installed high up in his balcony in Sharjah, two days after the incident. The lieutenant said police had to shoot the man in his leg as he was holding a gun and refused to surrender.
The other accused was also arrested shortly afterwards. The verdict can be appealed within 15 days.
