A 23-year-old man went on trial on the charge of breaking into the villa of his grandmother and robbing Dh 560,000 in cash and a gold necklace worth Dh 40,000.
The Court of First Instance was told the Emirati accused, an employee, broke into the villa in Al Barsha on two occasions on March 25 and April 3.
The defendant's 37-year-old uncle, an employee, said his mother had just come back from a trip outside of the UAE when she discovered the robbery. "It was around midnight on April 5. She found the window in her room open and the place was in a mess. I went to check it out and I found there had been a burglary.
She checked her money and found that Dh 560,000 in cash in total was stolen from two safes in addition to a gold necklace worth Dh 40,000. However, we noticed that both safes must have been opened with a key as there were no signs of damage".
A Yemeni salesman said the defendant visited the jewelry shop where he worked in a mall on March 27. "He wanted to sell a necklace which he claimed he bought from a shop in Al Ain to use as an ornament for his camel in case it emerged a winner in a race. But he changed his mind when it got the 4thposition.  I wrote down his details after he showed his passport and employment card. I purchased it from him for Dh 15,000. He then bought a chain for Dh 2,700 and left."
A police lieutenant said the accused admitted he broke into the villa of his grandmother while she was away. "He sneaked inside through a window in her bedroom which he opened with sharp tools. He did it twice and stole Dh 560,000 from two safes which he opened with a key left on the refrigerator".
