The Indian man was drunk when he stabbed his compatriot on September 7, last year, in their labour accommodation in Al Qusais, public prosecution records show. He inflicted critical injuries on him that could have killed him had it not been for the urgent medical surgeries.
Prosecutors accused him of attempted murder and consuming liquor without a permit.
He has been placed in detention.
The victim, a 33-year-old welder, said that after midnight, he locked the room they both shared with three other workers. "I thought he was in his bed. Few minutes later, we heard a strong knock on the door and it was the defendant. He looked angry because he was left outside. As I was blaming him for knocking in that noisy way, he got even more upset."
The complainant recalled how the defendant then picked up a vegetable knife and tried to stab him. "I pulled it from his hand and went to my bed. But then I was caught off guard by him stabbing me twice in the upper abdomen. He also stabbed me in my left arm and my armpit."
One of the workers snatched the knife from the defendant's hand and they called the police. "I was rushed to hospital. The accused was then under the influence of alcohol. He drank while having his dinner," the victim said.
A police corporal said the stabbing incident was reported at 2am. "There were blood splatters at the crime scene. The victim looked critically injured. The defendant claimed he had stabbed the victim over Dh100 he had lent him. Workers in the accommodation spoke about previous disputes between the two."
The court postponed the trial to February 17.
