Diego Maradona’s former girlfriend, wanted by the Dubai police in connection with a theft complaint filed by the legendary footballer, was arrested on Wednesday at a Buenos Aires airport, sources said.

“Rocio Oliva was arrested by Interpol agents when she arrived at the (Ezeiza International) terminal around 7.20 pm on a flight,” AFP quoted an Argentine federal police source as saying. Dubai Police sources said they had issued an arrest warrant against Maradona’s ex-girlfriend Rocio Oliva, 22, whom he has accused of stealing from his home in Dubai where he was hired as a club coach and a sports promoter.

“Maradona’s lawyers accused his ex-girlfriend of stealing some valuable items,” the sources said but declined to reveal the actual value of the allegedly missing property. Agency reports put the value of the items, including watches and diamond earrings, at £250,000.

“We are of the opinion that Maradona’s lawyers have a good case based on the documents submitted to the police. We are looking forward to a positive verdict by the Argentinean judicial authorities on extradition procedures,” said the Dubai Police sources.

Reports said the Argentine footballer, 53, asked her to leave his home following an argument over Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Oliva, a footballer herself, denies the allegations and says Maradona had assaulted her. The Evening Standard reported that Maradona accused Oliva of flirting with De Gea after dropping in on Manchester United while they were doing winter training in Dubai in February.
