The two accused, aged 20 and 23, faced charges of assault leading to permanent disability, and use of liquor. According to prosecution records, the two men were under the influence of liquor when they assaulted, along with other runaways, the victim using swords and sticks.

The alleged victim, a 26-year-old Emirati who works as an administrative assistant, told the prosecutor that the incident happened in October, 2010. It was about 1.30am when he stepped out of his car on the street in the Safa area to talk on his mobile phone. Two cars suddenly stopped in front of him and about eight men stepped out. He noticed that the cars plate numbers were covered.

They ran towards him carrying swords and sticks. Shocked and scared, he ran away but stumbled and fell down. They beat him up and sped away after other passersby gathered around. The complainant was rushed to Rashid Hospital.

An Emirati police corporal said that he happened to be driving around the afa area when he saw about eight men assaulting the complainant on the street in Safa.

He followed them in his car but could not take down their registration number because it was covered. However, he saw that the cars were caught on a radar camera on Al Wasl Road towards the Iranian Hospital. On the road, they stopped and one of the suspects removed the aluminium piece covering the plate number but still the corporal could not see well the number.

He later lost track of them on Shaikh Zayed Road. A police lieutenant said that they could track one of the accused, the policeman. With the help of an expert, they were able to find out the registration number of the car caught on radar that night since part of it was visible.

They knew that the man driving the car worked for the Civil Defense Department. When confronted, he denied having taken part in assaulting the complainant. But the defendant admitted that he was with the others that night and some of them with their faces covered, assaulted the complainant with swords and sticks.

The forensic medicine report showed that the complainant was left with a 12 per cent permanent disability in his hand because of the assault.
