Dubai - A 28-year-old policeman, who allegedly kidnapped and molested an air hostess at a late hour after making use of his police card has been charged in the Court of First Instance with kidnap, blackmailing and making threats, and molestation.

The Emirati is believed to have shown the Italian woman a police ID and then asked her to ride in his car to check her ID. The incident allegedly happened on September 10, last year.

The 30-year-old Italian air hostess said during the prosecution investigation that she had just stepped off a taxi with her Romanian friend near her accommodation in Al Hudaiba around 11pm when the defendant stopped her.

“I rode in his car after he insisted and reassured me that I don’t have to be afraid of him. He drove around for a while. He then pulled over in the dark to ask me if I was wearing any underwear. He also told me that he wanted to search me because I might be carrying drugs or under the influence of alcohol”.

She denied his accusations and told him she would not mind being searched but it should be a woman who would search her.

But the defendant threatened her that he would tell the police she was making out with her friend in the taxi if she did not let him search her.

She felt scared and tearfully asked him to take her back to where he picked her up.

He took her back but would not let her go before he searched her. He fondled her after he told her to raise her arms.

A police officer said that the defendant denied that he sexually harassed the woman. He claimed he only took her in his car to check her ID and also to wait for her friend to call back the taxi that had dropped them. He claimed he wanted to issue a ticket for the taxi driver for obstruction of traffic. The accused told the officer that he was attending a wedding in Abu Dhabi and came to Dubai later.

It was learnt during the investigation that the accused was driving a rental car at the time of the incident, the same car the woman and her friend saw him driving that night.

The accused has been placed in provisional detention.

The hearing has been adjourned to July 7. -mary@khaleejtimes.com
