A cleaner, who allegedly groped and tried to force himself on a woman at their company accommodation in Rashidiya, has been charged with molestation in the Court of First Instance.
The 30-year-old Sri Lankan is believed to have gone to the room of the woman, an Indonesian, and grabbed her then tried to pull her closer to him. He then pushed her to the bed and lay on top of her hugging and groping her.
The complainant, a 21-year-old therapist, told the prosecutor that the incident happened one afternoon in November last year.
She said as she was alone in her room, the defendant knocked on her door. He alleged he wanted to fix the closet and he was carrying a screwdriver with him.
She told him to leave, as she was feeling sleepy and her roommate, who owned the closet, was away, but the defendant did not want to leave and sat down next to her on the bed.
When she stood up, he grabbed her by her hand and tried to pull her towards him. He told her that he loved her and wanted to be her boyfriend. But the woman told him they were just work colleagues. She pulled her hand away from him asking him again, to leave, but he pushed her to the bed. She resisted and screamed loudly and finally managed to get away from him. The defendant then fled the scene.
The victim told her roommates and they reported the incident to the police and when arrested the defendant admitted to molesting the woman.
