A Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) inspector was assaulted and held back against his will by a driver when he tried to bust him for giving illegal car lift service to people.
The inspector, a 39-year-old Jordanian, said when he was on duty on October 19 last year, he spotted the defendant, a 35-year-old compatriot, parking outside a hotel in Al Muraqqabat.
“I made him believe that I was hailing cabs. I then went to the accused and asked him to drop me off at a hotel in Jumeirah for Dh80.”
The inspector let him drive for a few metres and then showed him his card. “I asked him to show me his driving licence and car registration card.” But the accused ignored instructions and drove towards Sharjah. “When he stopped at a traffic signal in the Sharjah Industrial Area, I tried to step out.”
The inspector sustained scratches and minor injury on his neck and chest when the accused grabbed him by his shirt to stop him from stepping out.
The accused then stepped out and tried to stop the inspector from clicking the car’s registration number. The inspector eventually broke away from the accused and took a taxi back to Dubai where he filed a complaint.
A medical report showed that the inspector sustained scratches on his upper chest and had minor injury on his arm and thumb.
The accused admitted in the investigation that he used his sister’s car to give lift to people and that his sister was unaware of that. He also confessed that he was fined twice before.
