Major-General Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Director of department, said two Arab suspects were arrested in separate operations by alert officers at the entry section in Dubai International Airport in April.

The huge drug hauls were not announced earlier because the investigation was going on.

Maj-Gen Jalil Mahdi did not divulge some specific details as the other suspects involved in the smuggling attempts have not been arrested.

He said that in the first case, the police had got information that a 43-year-old suspect was carrying a large quantity of drugs on his way from Brazil to Damascus via the Dubai International Airport. As he arrived at the transit hall on April 20, the police noticed that he was in panic.

On frisking him, the police found that he was hiding four plastic packets wrapped around his legs. The bags contained 5.238kg of cocaine with a total value of Dh700,000. The suspect confessed that he was aware that he was carrying drugs but he did not know the type. He said he had got the contraband from someone he met in Brazil. That person asked him to carry the stuff to Syria and gave him $3,000 in addition to the travelling expenses.

In another operation, the officers at the entry section arrested a 30-year-old Arab national, A.I., who arrived from Brazil on his way to Ivory Coast on April 22.

The police had information that the suspect was bringing in drugs on his way to Ivory Coast.

After his arrival at the airport, the police put him under surveillance. Officers called out his name to ensure that he was the wanted person.

On subjecting him to a personal search, the police found 21 capsules containing 290 grams of cocaine which he hid in his underwear. He confessed to the airport entry section head that he had also swallowed cocaine capsules, but he excreted some of them in the flight’s toilet. Sixty capsules weighing 920 grams were found in his stool after his arrest.

He said a Nigerian, identified as T.l. who met him in Morocco asked him to carry the drug from Brazil to Ivory Coast against $3,000 plus travel and hotel expenses. He travelled to Brazil and somebody gave him the capsules two days before his travel.

That person told him to swallow the capsules and that someone would meet him when he reached a hotel in Ivory Coast to receive the cocaine. Both suspects were referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution.

Maj-Gen Jalil Mahdi said cocaine is a very expensive drug used by high-income addicts. The price of one gram of cocaine is between Dh1,000 and Dh1,500 in the international market. He said anti-narcotic officers at the entry points are exerting tireless efforts to monitor and prevent smuggling of drugs. The police also cooperate with international agencies combating drugs to arrest the criminals who want to destroy the youth and the economy of the country.

He called on the public to contact the police if they have any information related to drugs.
