The Sharjah Police arrested an Asian who tried to smuggle gold pieces worth Dh100,000  through Sharjah International Airport while leaving for his home country.
The police suspected the presence of a tin container showing food supplement formula, which the traveller hid under his clothes.
They decided to check its contents. When they opened it, the officers were shocked to see pieces of gold jewellery worth Dh100,000 inside the supplement powder.
During interrogation, the suspect told the police that he had bought the gold stuff and presented the receipts of purchase. He said that he decided to hide the jewellery because he was trying to escape paying tax in his home country. The man has been shifted to CID for further questioning.
The initial investigation revealed that the traveller had tried to conceal the gold to avoid paying tax and earn more profit by selling the gold, according to the CID.
Lt Col Matter al-Ketbi, director of Sharjah airport police station, said that police at the airport has zero tolerance for illegal activities like these.
He urged expatriates to refrain from resorting to such illegal activities, which violate the law, and make the offenders accountable for their wrong action.
